Weight Bearing Capacity of Cable Protectors
The weight-bearing capacity of some cable protectors is so great that they can tolerate a 20 ton truck rolling over it. These are the protectors that are made to be useful in construction and industrial sites and other areas where access by large truck and utility vehicles is necessary. Valuable electrical cables, hose lines and cables must often cross the traffic zone of large vehicles to support the many activities. Whether the lines are connecting equipment that is producing work on a site or supporting separate office space, those wires need a guard from the passage of vehicles and people.
How Much Can it Stand?
A Linebacker® 5 Channel Cable Protector will tolerate 20,150 pounds per tire, for 40,300 pounds per axle of weight. The protector itself is a mere 36 inches long by 20 inches wide and 2.31 inches high. It weighs 25 pounds per section and is made of a UV stabilized polyurethane, made in the USA. The individual parts themselves have a T-shaped connection that allows several protectors to be attached to each other in sections of three feet at a time. Forklifts carrying huge loads and heavy trucks can pass over them constantly without damaging the various lines. Not all protectors require such a heavy load bearing capacity, so additional solutions exist, including those with fewer channels for less cable lines, and more narrow capacity for the lines running through them, and ADA compliant ramps.
Less Demanding Cable Protectors
Not all protectors will need to support such heavy vehicles, but even some of the one channel devices can still bear 8,500 pounds per tire, which could be represented by a two ton vehicle with 15,000 pounds of weight on it. Even some drop over protectors that have the line exposed to the surface on which it is sitting can withstand the same loads. Each axle will be limited to the weight indicated by the two tires, so in actuality, only the weight of the front or the back of the tire is measured at a time. The important point is that these devices are built to endure a lot while protecting cables and wires.
Cable Protector Construction
Quality cable protectors are able to tolerate such intense pressure and weight because of their engineering. There are two primary ways and one additional type of the way they hold the cable. The first is the "drop-in" version in which a hinged door opens and the line is placed along the channel. The second type is a drop-over protector where a cable is laid on the floor and the protector dropped over it. A final type is open top and has a pliable top that will allow inserting the cable from the top, yet still ensuring protection of the line.
